Company description:: NEW JERSEY – When communities require help and healing they often turn to local organizations for assistance. Morning Star Community Tabernacle (MSCT) is one such organization that has been serving the Linden community during the last few years by providing employment, training, and job assistance. Through its Community Development Corporation (MSCDC), one of the organization’s many missions involve uplifting the regional neighborhoods through its employment and training initiatives.
Dawn C. Reid, the program director for the employment and training services says, “The goal of the MSCDC’s employment and training programs are to decrease the unemployment rate and increase the workforce by matching great companies with skilled and diverse employees.” “Likewise, we are determined to provide phenomenal programs that provide career seekers with the tools needed for searching, finding, and keeping employment, all while using high-end technology,” Reid also stated.
Comprising entirely of volunteer staff, who are well-known professionals in their respective industries, MSCDC has provided various services that include: computer literacy training, résumé development, interview preparation, job placement assistance, and career coaching. In addition, the organization has served the community as a resource center and assisted clients with entrepreneurial ventures and adult education efforts. They also plan to implement a youth employment and training pilot program, based upon their adult-geared services, later this year.
MSCDC has successfully hosted career workshops for the Elizabeth Salvation Army, conducted 25 in-house career workshops for the community, and assisted over 600 candidates with career development and training projects. Also, major New Jersey companies, such as Kelly Janitorial Services, and UPS, have also utilized MSCDC’s employment and training placement services in finding and keeping qualified employees and consultants.
In 2003, the Morning Star Community Development Corporation was awarded a grant from Fleet Bank to help upgrade their technology center, where the core programs for employment and training are provided. This was an important and much needed contribution as the organization require sufficient funding in order to maintain above competitive services. Prior to this award, the programs were financially supported solely by community donations and event fundraisers. “If it wasn’t for God’s grace and favor, dedicated volunteer staff, and support from Morning Star Community Tabernacle members, we would not have made it this far…our programs have been very successful, even with limited funding sources, but, in order to maintain the high standards our client’s expect, we must progress forward and seek partnerships and collaborative efforts with state, public, and private foundations, so that we can ensure the continued strength and mobility of our programs…” Reid said.
Craig Matthews, a client of the center says: “The word WOW best describes what went through my mind as I looked at the courses and training opportunities that were being offered through the employment and training programs of MSCDC. For instance, the center can prepare you to become certified in Microsoft Office desktop applications…they have truly expanding my computer knowledge in directions that I could never have imagined.”
This year promises to be a fruitful one for participants of the MSCDC employment and training programs. The organization is sponsoring a major career convention on May 3, 2004 from 10AM to 6PM at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, New Jersey. Companies such as UPS and PMJ Marketing, as well as DeVry Technical Institute will be on hand to meet with career seekers. Likewise, there will be several workshops throughout the day to motivate and assist individuals with their employment and professional development endeavors.
